Helladic period

The Helladic period of Mainland Greece is divided in Early Helladic (EH), Middle Helladic (MH) and Late Helladic (LH). Each of these is again subdivided into three parts (I, II, III), while LH III has still much finer subdivisions.

The dates given in the following table use the "high chronology". This dating system poses some problems with synchronism, especially with ancient Egypt, but on the other hand is in full accordance with scientific methods. So the eruption of the Theran volcano, a key anchor point for Bronze Age chronology in the Aegean, is placed in high chronology around 1620 BC, perfectly matching the radiocarbon date between 1628 and 1600 BC.
