Tragana archaeological site

The two Mycenaean tholos tombs near Tragana lie on the southern end of the hills that extend from the village to the Southwest. They are called the "Tragana tholos tombs", although they are more easily approached from Romanou than from the village of Tragana. Anyway, they are hardly known to tourists and not visited frequently

The pictures presented here only show "tholos 1" - the nearby "tholos 2" is somewhat smaller and less well preserved.

A peculiarity is that these tholoi were built and used in the Late Helladic IIIC period, i.e. between 1200 and 1050 BC, when the age of the monumental tombs elsewhere was definitely over. Tholos 1 also contained burials from the Protogeometric period and in tholos 2 were even remains from the Hellenistic period, which can be interpreted as either profane or in the context of an ancestry cult.
